About Tanzania Tarime AA and the Region
Shilanga AMCOS (Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society) is a tight-knit group of approximately 200 smallholder farmers located in the Tarime District of Tanzania’s northern Mara Region. Situated near the Kenyan border, this area shares a similar climate and soil composition with neighboring Kenyan coffee-growing regions, which contributes to the dynamic and expressive profiles found in the cup.
Coffee cultivation in this region benefits from the high altitudes of 1,800 to 2,000 meters, volcanic loam soils, and ample rainfall. The result is a growing environment that fosters dense, sweet, and complex coffee cherries.
Processing and Community Impact
Coffee at Shilanga AMCOS is fully washed, with cherries carefully hand-sorted before being pulped and fermented for 48 hours. After fermentation, the parchment is thoroughly washed, graded, and dried on raised beds for 10 to 14 days. The cooperative’s central processing allows for consistency and quality control across all contributing farms.
This lot is the result of a multi-year quality improvement program with their local partners. By investing in training, infrastructure, and agronomic support, the community has been empowered to produce specialty-grade coffee that reflects their terroir and dedication.
Flavor Profile and Brewing Recommendations
Tanzania Shilanga AMCOS showcases a vibrant and balanced profile, with juicy blackcurrant, ripe plum, and floral honey notes leading the cup. It features a silky body and bright acidity that lingers pleasantly on the finish. This coffee performs beautifully as a pour-over or filter brew, where its delicate complexity can fully shine. It's also versatile enough for a nuanced single-origin espresso.
