Limited Quantities Available
This is a rare, limited lot that most of our clients have not had the chance to try yet. Coffees like this usually wait for a slow pour over, which not everyone has the time or gear for. Pronto changes that. Pronto Ethiopia Sidamo Natural is single origin Specialty Instant Coffee, roasted in Calgary from the Ethiopia Shantawene Natural G1 lot, and all it needs is hot water.
Berry sweetness, tropical complexity and a finish that stays with you, from a Cup of Excellence Top 7 lot, in a 4 g packet you can brew anywhere.
Where it comes from
This coffee starts at the Shantawene washing station in the Sidama Highlands of southern Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. It is grown on the Daye Bensa farm at 1,900 to 2,400 metres above sea level, where the cherries ripen slowly under a natural forest canopy in volcanic soil.
Sidama is one of Ethiopia's most celebrated coffee zones, and wild heirloom varieties have grown here for centuries. High altitude, volcanic earth and cool highland air give the fruit time to mature slowly, and that slow ripening is what builds the layered, fruit driven flavour in the cup. This is more than a coffee region. It is where coffee began.
Sun dried on raised beds
This is a natural process coffee. The cherries are hand picked at peak ripeness and dried whole, with the seed still inside the fruit, for 14 to 18 days on raised African beds under the Ethiopian sun. All that time with the fruit is where the intense berry sweetness and the almost dessert like depth come from. It is slow, hands on work, and you can taste every day of it.
Why we chose it
This lot placed in the Top 7 at Ethiopia's Cup of Excellence, one of the most demanding competitions in specialty coffee. We are proud of that, but it is not why we bought it. We tasted it, and it moved us: fruit forward, full bodied and unlike anything else we sourced this year. We choose every coffee we carry on one thing, the cup, and through our direct sourcing relationships we work to make sure the farmers and producers behind it are paid fairly.
How it tastes
Red berry and lemonade up front, then plum, tropical fruit and a wine like finish that lingers.
How to make it
- Shake one packet into your cup.
- Add 8 to 10 oz of hot water or milk.
- Stir and drink. No equipment, no grounds, no cleanup.
Tip: make your first cup with hot water and drink it black, then take your time with it. As the cup cools, red berry and lemonade give way to plum, tropical fruit and a wine like finish. Hot milk works too, for a rounder, softer cup.
Where it fits
Sunrise at a backcountry campsite. A long layover. A ski hill parking lot. A cabin with a kettle and no plan. Pronto Ethiopia Sidamo Natural brings a Cup of Excellence single origin to places that never had one.
What's in the box
4 single serve packets, 4 g each (16 g net). Bilingual English and French packaging. Shelf stable, so it lives happily in a pack, a desk drawer or a glovebox.
Roasted in Calgary by Fratello Coffee Roasters, a family roaster for two generations. Responsibly purchased, consciously chosen and carefully roasted, from the highlands to your cup.
