Berry sweetness, tropical complexity. A finish you won't forget.
Origin: This exceptional coffee comes from the Shantawene washing station in the Sidama Highlands of Ethiopia — the birthplace of coffee itself. Grown on the Daye Bensa farm at elevations between 1,900 and 2,400 metres above sea level, the beans develop slowly under a natural forest canopy on volcanic soil, producing a cup of extraordinary depth and complexity.
About the Region: Sidama is one of Ethiopia's most celebrated coffee-growing zones, where wild heirloom coffee varieties have thrived for centuries. The combination of extreme altitude, volcanic soil, and cool highland temperatures creates ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation — the kind that produces layered, fruit-driven flavors that can't be replicated anywhere else in the world. This is not just a coffee region. It is where coffee began.
Cup of Excellence Recognition: The Ethiopia Shantawene Natural G1 earned a Top 7 finish at Ethiopia's Cup of Excellence — one of the most rigorous and respected competitions in specialty coffee. Out of hundreds of submissions, only the finest lots are awarded. We tasted this coffee and chose it not for the ranking, but for what was in the cup: a fruit-forward, full-bodied experience unlike anything else we sourced this year.
Natural Process — Sun-Dried on Raised Beds: This coffee is processed using the Natural method, meaning the whole coffee cherry is dried with the bean still inside. Hand-picked at peak ripeness, the cherries spend 14 to 18 days drying slowly on raised African beds under the Ethiopian sun. This extended contact with the fruit is what creates the intense berry sweetness and concentrated, almost dessert-like complexity that defines this lot. It is a labor-intensive process — and the result speaks for itself.
Our Sourcing Commitment: We select every coffee we carry based on one criterion: the cup. This Ethiopia lot was chosen because it moved us. Through our direct sourcing relationships, we work to ensure fair compensation for the farmers and producers behind every bag — and to bring you coffees that reflect real places, real people, and real craft.
Brewing Recommendation: We recommend this coffee as a pour-over. Brew it hot, then let the cup cool — as the temperature drops, red berry and lemonade give way to plum, tropical fruit, and a wine-like finish that lingers. It also performs beautifully as a cold brew, where the natural sweetness intensifies overnight.
Discover the highlands, the harvest, and fifty years of careful selection — in every cup of Ethiopia Shantawene Natural G1. Responsibly purchased, consciously chosen, and carefully roasted for a truly unforgettable coffee experience.
